Arizona Public Service (APS) has implemented programs that reimagine the relationship between a utility and distributed energy resources (DERs) and that will be instrumental in its commitment to achieve 100% clean energy by 2050. APS uses EnergyHub’s Mercury DERMS platform to dynamically manage a portfolio of grid-edge assets including thermostats, batteries, water heaters, and solar inverters for an array of grid services. APS leverages DERs for peak demand reduction, load shifting and renewables matching, solar management, and advanced load and capacity forecasting. Services are available year round, multiple times a day, unlike event-based calls for DR. They have implemented these programs with both bring-your-own and direct install models. APS has evolved from a DERMS early-adopter to a pioneer of a customer-centric approach to managing the grid.

Tom Hines

Tom Hines

Arizona Public Service

Tom Hines is an energy efficiency expert with over 20 years of experience in DSM program design, implementation, and evaluation. He has successfully designed and managed multiple award-winning energy efficiency programs, including the APS ENERGY STAR Homes program and the APS Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program.

Most recently, Tom has served as a strategic advisor on the design and development of APS’ entire portfolio of DSM programs – working with program managers, implementation contractors, and evaluators to explore opportunities for reducing costs, maximizing cost effectiveness, and otherwise optimizing the APS portfolio of DSM programs.

Renée Guillory

Renée Guillory

Arizona Public Service

Renée entered the energy industry as a solar EPC contracts manager. Since joining APS in 2011, Renée has served as solar installer liaison; commercial solar project manager; curriculum developer for the Qualified Solar Sales & Installation program; and project manager for the Solar Innovation Study, whose results informed APS’ DER roadmaps. Renée then served as project manager for the various fleets built out as part of the Rewards initiative, and now supports APS’ strategic efforts to scale aggregated DERs.
