The Grid-Edge Keeps on Giving: Expanding a Multi-DER Strategy

Paul Wassink

Paul manages the actively controlled DER programs for National Grid in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The DER portfolio includes both commercial and residential programs and devices such as thermostats, batteries, EVs, EVSEs, solar inverters, CHP, generators, HVAC setbacks, and lighting systems.​

Paul has been the DER program manager for National Grid since 2016. Before that Paul worked as an energy engineer helping commercial, industrial, military, and government customers to implement energy efficiency programs.

Aakriti’s role at EnergyHub entails working with the product, sales, and business development teams to develop strategic product positioning for the Mercury DERMS platform. Prior to joining EnergyHub, Aakriti has held positions at Innowatts and GTM research (now Wood Mackenzie) in the capacity of corporate strategy, research, and market development, facilitating the go-to-market strategies of various energy software technologies.

Aakriti received an MS and BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering, with an additional major in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University.

Mr. Saucedo is a customer service professional with over fifteen years of program management experience at SCE in the area of Demand Side Management. He has supported reliability and price responsive programs since 2004, executing residential and non-residential DR strategies. His current responsibilities include working with program staff and SCE-approved third-party vendors to manage the daily operational activities for SCE’s BYOT program, “Smart Energy Program.” This includes, but is not limited to, managing new enrollment acquisition activities, event dispatch strategy, execution and evaluation, and refining program design to meet organizational initiatives while maintaining / improving customer satisfaction.

Mr. Saucedo holds a B.S in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.

Gerrianna Cohen

Gerrianna is a Specialist at Con Edison working on residential demand response programs including Con Edison’s smart thermostat program. Gerrianna has a strong interest in the intersection of technology and energy efficiency/demand response and enjoys exploring innovative ways to reduce residential peak demand.

She holds a B.A. in both Computer Science and Environmental Studies from Brandeis University. Outside of work, Gerrianna enjoys New York’s food scene and exploring the city.

Michael Siemann, PhD.

Dr. Siemann’s primary responsibility at Resideo is to manage the technical aspects of the Connected Savings DR platform and the two-dozen load management programs it supports. As one of the platform’s inventers, he has been instrumental in driving it from inception in 2010 to an industry leading DRMS for residential energy products by focusing on data, analytics, and automated intelligence. Dr. Siemann is also involved with EE and HVAC fault detection products, serves as technical advisor for global energy design teams, and is a leading advocate for Resideo’s role in protecting the environment.

Dr. Siemann received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland specializing in the Thermal, Fluid, and Energy Sciences in 2013. He holds two patents on the core technology behind several Energy Management products and has seen his technology grow from a startup with WeatherBug & Whisker Labs to an industry leading DRMS at Resideo Technologies. Michael is presenting at PLMA for his second time.

Beth Crouchet, MS, PMP

Beth Crouchet’s primary responsibility at Resideo is to expand energy and grid services for Utility programs. She has worked as the Program Manager of an industry leading Residential Demand Response program at Austin Energy, laying the groundwork for expansion to electric vehicles and recurring payment and on bill credits. She now works with the Resideo Technologies Energy Management Team to deliver demand response to over 70 programs with multiple aggregators across the nation.

Mrs. Crouchet joined Resideo in 2020 and has provided leadership roles in the organization with various responsibilities since that time. She holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Concordia University and an M.S. in Population and Conservation Biology from Texas State University where she studied the direct effects of climate change on native tree mortality. Her work has been published in Frontiers Journal and she continues to work toward reducing contributors to climate change through energy efficiency and energy reduction programs.

Effective EV Load Management: Is It the Car, Charger, or Both?

David Almeida is Opinion Dynamics' Director of Transportation Electrification, where he leads portfolio evaluations of multi-year utility programs as well as innovative research and development projects focused on expanding electric vehicle (EV) adoption. David has dedicated the last decade of his career to the challenges and opportunities involved in electrifying the transportation sector with a background that includes developing and launching PG&E’s EV Charge Network, a $130M EV charging station installation program, including customer and utility owned charging stations as well as leading the development and approval for an innovative commercial EV rate which brings the cost of fueling an EV below parity with gasoline and diesel. His expertise extends to Vehicle Grid Integration (VGI) as evidenced by his management of a nationally recognized VGI pilot, BMW i ChargeForward, which leveraged residential EVs and stationary storage to provide grid resiliency and support the integration of renewable energy.

Albert Chiu

Albert Chiu is an Expert Product Manager in the Integrated Grid Planning and Innovation Department at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). In his 20+ years working in Load Management (LM), Integrated Demand Side Management (IDSM) and Distributed Energy Resource (DER), he has developed Energy Efficiency (EE), Demand Response (DR) and Vehicle Grid Integration (VGI) policies and programs for utility customers. He is the lead of the DR Emerging Technology and IDSM Programs at PG&E. He leads all DR technology-related studies, policies development and strategies.

Working jointly with Lawrence Berkeley and National Lab and Southern California Edison, Albert started the OpenADR Alliance in 2010 and has held various positions on the OpenADR Alliance Board. He was involved in the NIST National Smart Grid activities, multiple Technical Advisor Groups with NRDC, CEC, EPRI, ACEEE, CA universities, national labs and other companies. He participated in Code and Standard works with NIST, NAESB, DOE, CEC, USGBC, IEC and other standards organizations.

Eric Mallia

Eric Mallia is the Vice President of Geotab Energy and has been working in the energy management industry for the past 12 years. He is a published author on energy management topics in the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessments, Municipal World Magazine, and the National Post. In his role with Geotab, he and his team work with 44 electric utility companies in implementing its SmartCharge Platform as an EV load management aggregation service.

Eric holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Master of Environmental Studies degree from the University of Waterloo. He drives a Tesla Model 3, is currently writing a children's book, and lives in Waterloo, Ontario where he enjoys being active with his wife and two sons.

John Powers

An energy economist and serial entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience in consulting and technology development in energy markets, John has worked in energy efficiency, demand response, and renewables for most of his career. As CEO of Extensible Energy, he leads a stellar team of cleantech experts developing software solutions for building controls, solar, storage, and load flexibility applications.

Prior to Extensible Energy, John founded Energy Interactive, a pioneering software company in online energy applications, including some of the first customer engagement and demand response software for nonresidential electricity customers. He served as Director of Retail Software at ABB after ABB acquired Energy Interactive.

He has a B.A. in economics from Reed College and an M.A. also in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. 

Lauren Burke

For the last several years, Lauren has advocated for sustainable businesses at the intersection of transportation and energy. Her experience lies in designing and implementing marketing strategy to drive industry growth. Before Enel X, she led marketing and public affairs for electric vehicle and energy clients, supporting clients through M&As, global sales, fundraising and regulatory development milestones. Clients included Proterra, Greenlots (acquired by Shell), Opower (acquired by Oracle), PlugShare (merged with Recargo) and others. 

Lauren has also garnered international experience as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, serving in Albania. There, she worked with local organizations on environmental and human rights-based projects. Most notably, she co-created a documentary on the discourse of gender and employment in Albania, which premiered on one of Albania’s leading talk shows and was recognized by U.S. Ambassador Arvizu. She holds an MBA and BA from UC Berkeley.

Making EV Load Flexibility a Reality

Amy Schmidt's areas of research include load management, demand response program design, and non-wires alternatives projects. Before she joined E Source, the Universities Council on Water Resources published her thesis on how utilities set water prices. Amy received a BA in environmental economics from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Bryan Jungers

Bryan Jungers conducts research on emerging, energy-efficient, and distributed energy resource technologies. His main areas of expertise lie in electric vehicles, electric motors, batteries and energy storage, distributed generation, controlled environment agriculture, and renewable power systems. Bryan brings to the company over 15 years of professional experience as an energy engineer and research analyst, including for the Electric Power Research Institute, California Energy Commission, and University of California at Davis. His industry knowledge, combined with hands-on experience, enable him to address member needs from a holistic, systems-oriented perspective. Bryan worked as both a research manager, product manager, and lead analyst before entering his current role. He holds a BS in environmental engineering from Humboldt State University and an MS in civil and environmental engineering from the University of California at Davis.

Angela Gordon, a senior policy advisor with TRC, has worked in the electric, natural gas and water industries for 35 years.  Her areas of expertise include rates and regulatory issues, utility business development, industry reforms, EE/DR program design and implementation and utility mergers and acquisitions.  Ms. Gordon has been addressing utility industry change and realignments since early in her career during the implementation of PURPA and the deregulation of natural gas pipelines.  Ms. Gordon specializes in regulatory strategic planning, rate analysis, utility program design and implementation practices.

Nathan Shannon

Nathan is SECC's President & CEO and leads the organization's research, membership and policy initiatives. He came on as SECC's Deputy Director in early 2015, and in this role, he grew membership almost 40% to over 150 members. Along with his work on the Research and Policy committees, Nathan leads member recruitment and engagement and routinely presents SECC 's research at major industry conferences and policy workshops around the country. 

He previously served as Director of Operations and Major Gifts Officer at Athens Land Trust where he had a focus on policy and sustainability through his work with land conservation and carbon credits. He also gained extensive knowledge in the realm of non-profit development and capacity building. Nathan has a bachelor’s in economics from the University of Georgia and a background in financial management.

Throughout her career, Jen has worked extensively on the integration of clean energy solutions such as solar, storage, demand response and electric vehicles into the electric power sector.  She currently serves as President and CEO for the Association of Energy Services (AESP).  Prior to her current role, she served as Vice President of Research and Education for the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) from 2015 to 2020.  Jen also served as Manager in the Renewables and Conservation Department for the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) from 2006 to 2015 where she led their renewable energy, demand side management , sustainability, and transportation electrification efforts.  Additionally, Jen served as a Senior Energy Analyst in the Photovoltaics and Advanced Technologies group at the Florida Solar Energy Center from 1998 to 2006 where she authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and led research on utility integration of photovoltaic systems and biomass to energy.  She holds degrees in Environmental Studies and Chemistry from Florida International University and an MBA from University of Central Florida.  She currently serves as Chair of Drive Electric Florida and sits on the Steering Committees for the UCF College of Engineering and Computer Sciences and UCF’s Florida Solar Energy Center.  In 2020 she was appointed to the Florida Advisory Council on Climate and Energy.

Kate Strickland works as a research manager at SEPA with a focus on utility business models and regulatory innovation. In addition, she is the staff co-lead for SEPA’s Energy Storage Working Group, and a team member of the Renovate Initiative, a collaborative effort focused on state regulatory process innovation. Previously at SEPA, she worked with the 51st State Initiative, shaping the evolution of the utility sector, and supported the engagement facilitating the D.C. Public Service Commission’s grid modernization (MEDSIS) initiative in the District.

Prior to SEPA, Kate completed her master’s degree from John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in International Relations & Economics, with a concentration in Energy, Resources & Environment.

David Pudleiner has over 8-years of experience working in the field of building energy analysis. Andrea began her personal mission to drive adaptation to climate disruption over 17 years ago in Argentina. Her career has since taken her throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, as a business leader in Smart Grid, Distributed Energy Systems (DES), and Microgrids, specializing in business model innovation, intrapreneurship, and digital strategy.  

She is currently Senior Director of Grid Modernization and Innovation at Liberty Utilities, leading in grid edge technologies, across all of Liberty’s 42 subsidiary utilities in North and South America and Bermuda. Andrea also drives internal innovation and evolution of the utility business model.  

Previously, she served as Global Head of Distributed Energy Systems & Networks at Worley, the largest engineering services firm in the energy sector, with over 50,000 people worldwide. In this role Andrea was responsible for spearheading Worley’s strategy for the Microgrid and broader DES markets, growing these business lines for Worley by over 10x in three years.  

As well as her Fulbright Doctorate in Economic, Technical and Social Models for Microgrids, Andrea holds a B.A. and M.Sci. in Engineering, and certification in Digital Business Strategy from MIT Sloan School of Management.

Jim is a Principal Engineer at the Schatz Energy Research Center at Humboldt State University with over 26 years of dedication. His work involves planning, analysis, project development and implementation, with a special focus on tribal and public sector projects in rural northern California. Most recently he has worked to develop, deploy and evaluate cutting edge microgrid technology. He has managed or co-managed two microgrid projects at the Blue Lake Rancheria, including the 2018 DistribuTECH Project of the Year for DER Integration. Currently he is co-managing the Redwood Coast Airport Microgrid Project; this will be the first 100% renewable, front-of-the-meter, multi-customer microgrid on Pacific Gas and Electric’s distribution system.

Erik Anderson is the Strategic Manager for Renewable Energy and Emerging Technologies with Pacific Power. Early in his career with Pacific Power, Erik managed the interconnection queue for small scale renewables and developed and managed numerous company sponsored incentive programs for the installation of small scale solar. While still involved with policies related to small scale renewables, Erik also participates in Pacific Power efforts related to customer sited storage, and is leading efforts related to the community solar program in Oregon. Erik holds a Juris Doctorate from Lewis and Clark Law School and is a member of the Oregon State Bar Association.

Kerry holds a BS and MS Degrees from Oklahoma State University. She is past president of the Oklahoma Association of Energy Engineers (AEEOK), Board Chair for Sustainable Tulsa, member of ASHRAE and International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHP).

Prior to coming to Virtual Peaker, Shadea worked as a Business Analyst at an e-payment software company, conducting quality control and assisting software development processes. She spent many years as a Program Director for a municipal internship program. Through that work, she gained an excellent understanding of municipal organizations and honed her project management and coalition building skills. Shadea holds a Master of Public Affairs from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Louisville. She resides in Louisville with her partner and two children.

Charlotte joined Sidewalk out of commercial real estate, where she led sustainability and energy development for projects as massive as Hudson Yards. Prior to her 10 years with the real estate owner/developer Related, Charlotte worked in construction management and architecture. 

Charlotte has a Bachelor of Sciencefrom Brown University in Environmental Science with a focus in Architecture and Engineering. Charlotte loves her work, lunch walks, tennis, and long runs. She’s a resident of Harlem, where she owns a ping pong table and keeps the fridge stocked with beer.

Syed Mir is the Vice-President Corporate Services & CIO at London Hydro.  He is responsible for Customer Services, Meter Services, Corporate Communications and Information Technology.  He joined London Hydro in 2010 from Ontario Power Generation where he held various Vice-President positions. He’s been the Chair of the Green Button Alliance Board since its formation in 2015 to promote  global adoption of the Green Button Standard.
