We are looking for a Manager, Regulatory Affairs who believes that diving deeply into administrative business of the largest investor-owned utilities and state-level public utility commissions, in partnership with our Energy team, is the next big thing. You will work with a passionate group of Energy professionals that serve the majority of utilities in North America.

The Manager of Regulatory Affairs will report to the Director of Energy & Emerging Markets and work side by side with the ecobee Energy Team to lead engagement in key states to advance utility programs that employ ecobee products and services.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Be the North American face of the ecobee Energy team for government and regulatory stakeholders at the Federal, State and Provincial level
  • Analyze utility, state and federal filings to provide a sales pipeline for the Energy team
  • Lead engagement in key states with the public utility commissions to advance utility programs that employ and benefit ecobee products and services
  • Develop and execute engagement plans, in partnership with the Energy team to track and influence policy changes to support the ecobee Energy business goals
  • Support ecobee’s ongoing efforts with federal and state-level standards
  • Provide timely, insightful analysis to the ecobee Energy team on risks and opportunities stemming from changes in legislation and regulation and provide the Energy team with risk and opportunity assessments as it relates to our various utility partners and Energy programs
  • Represent ecobee at relevant commission meetings, hearings, trade associations and Energy sector coalitions

SMUD Job Opportunity: Senior Project ManagerSMUD

 
The Advanced Energy Solutions Research and Development (AES R&D) department develops and implements progressive research activities that support SMUD’s Clean Energy Vision, including eliminating carbon emissions from our power supply by 2030. This involves research, development, and demonstration programs (RD&D), often in collaboration with federal and state funding organizations, across our research programs areas. The portfolio of research topics covers customer and grid-focused technologies and applications, including Building Electrification and Efficiency, Electric Transportation, Load Flexibility, Distributed and Utility-Scale Storage, Generation, and Carbon Capture and Sequestration. Our team is subdivided between Project Management-focused and Engineering-focused disciplines with matrixed responsibilities on larger projects.  This position will be a Senior Project Management role supporting the entire R&D team by providing managerial skills to plan, organize, budget, staff, direct, coordinate, control and evaluate assigned projects as well as helping develop, propose and plan new initiatives.  This role typically oversees one or more large, complex projects. Manages enterprise projects with budgets in excess of $10,000,000.

AES R&D is responsible for research that advances innovation in critical enterprise initiatives, furthers our position of industry influence, and prepares SMUD for long-term solutions and alternatives. To support these outcomes, R&D is seeking a Sr. Project Manager to:

  • Provide leadership, project management skills and supervision necessary to plan, organize, and conduct, advanced technologies Research & Development (R&D) activities in multiple topic areas.
  • To act as subject matter expert, project manager and/or construction manager for the development of advanced generation technologies and business model strategies and programs, to support attainment of SMUD's business objectives.
  • To provide insights into the relationship between advanced generation technologies, customer resources, demand response/load flexibility technologies and their impacts on resource planning and forecasting, energy trading, system operations, grid planning, power generation, and distribution assets. 
  • Research design and evaluation expertise.

In addition to these proficiencies, the position will require engaging in the following activities.

  • Strategic research planning
  • Networking with industry to follow and influence codes and standards for emerging technology
  • Grant acquisition, implementation, and management, primarily with federal and state funding organizations
  • Organizational navigation within SMUD

SMUD has committed to eliminating carbon emissions from our power supply by 2030 in our Zero Carbon Plan. A critical component of the plan is to retire or retool our existing thermal generation plants and replace them with alternative generation sources or Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) that meet SMUD’s energy, capacity and reliability standards. This position will focus on projects that feature renewable generation technologies, carbon capture, energy storage, electric vehicles, smart inverters, and load flexibility/Virtual Power Plants; ensuring compatibility with utility planning and operations; technology laboratory and field tests; technoeconomic and feasibility assessments; and supporting modeling and analytic activities.

The Product Marketing Associate will work within/closely with the Product team to support the communications strategy for the next generation of distributed energy resource (DER) control and optimization product capabilities. Position Overview

Advanced Energy provides independent engineering services for utility scale renewable energy resources connected to transmission and distribution systems. We are seeking candidates who are passionate about quality and ensuring the safety and reliability of renewable energy systems interconnected with the grid. 

An ideal candidate will have an electrical engineering background and knowledge of the electric power industry and transmission and distribution systems. Candidates seeking a senior level position must have at least seven years of experience, advanced knowledge and have passed the FE exam; it is also strongly preferred to have a PE and other certifications relevant to job duties. 

In addition, it is desirable for candidates to possess the following:

  • Knowledge of planning, design, interconnection, construction, and commissioning of utility scale renewable generation facilities including inverter-based resources (IBRs) and energy storage systems connecting to transmission and/or medium voltage distribution system 
  • Experience performing engineering analysis, design documentation review, and/or field testing for electrical systems 
  • Ability to perform field evaluations to assess aspects of the quality of design, construction, and operation; ability to conduct field tests of electrical equipment
  • Experience presenting concise results to customers through reports that delineate observations, results, and recommendations for further action
  • Preferred to have knowledge of electrical and utility industry standards such as:
    • National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
    • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards: IEEE 1547-2018 and IEEE 2800-2022
    • North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Guidelines (2018 and 2019) and standards such as PRC-024-3
    • Rural Utility Services (RUS) or investor-owned utility electric distribution construction standards
  • Strong commitment to safety and attention to detail

The job requires team members to spend part of their time visiting utility scale renewable facilities currently located primarily in North Carolina and South Carolina. Travel varies week to week and throughout the year. It is typically up to 1-3 days a week with overnight travel sometimes necessary. The rest of the time is balanced between the main office and/or working remotely at a home office.
