Spark DER as a Grid Resource

Spark DER as a Grid Resource

Managing increasing electrification is a front-line issue for all stakeholders in the energy industry. Now more than ever, utilities must identify and implement solutions to address the rise of EVs that will stress the grid and grid management tools. Distributed Intelligence (DI), an energy orchestration tool, can act as a long-term solution to automate the load management process, working harmoniously with existing power system management tools, and leveraging customer-sited assets (CSAs).

In this presentation, Jovani Price, a Director in Duke Energy’s Integrated Grid Strategy team, will share how the utility is applying DI and Flexible Load Management strategies to reduce risks and close operational gaps through gradual experimentation processes. Providing real-world examples of pilot projects Duke Energy has underway, Price will show how their three-step tactical plan mitigates the substantial risks of implementing DI software on existing infrastructure and takes advantage of existing grid edge work to accelerate progress.

About PLMA's Strategic Initiative A: Spark DER as a Grid Resource

The goal of this PLMA strategic initiative is to shepherd DER management into a grid resource. The Volunteer Taskforce working on this PLMA initiative is led by Eric Van Orden, and hosts various events, workshops, and discussions for PLMA members on an ongoing basis.

About PLMA's Strategic Initiative B: Decarbonization thru Load Management

The goal of this PLMA strategic initiative is to demonstrate how load management is an important tool for achieving decarbonization goals.
