ecobee Launches Pilot Program with California Utility to Help Prevent Power Emergenciesecobee

Innovative pilot aimed at conserving energy and helping prevent power outages

TORONTO – Sep. 9, 2022 – ecobee, a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems (NYSE: GNRC), today announced the launch of a pilot program with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) designed to help prevent power outages caused by extreme weather, sustained high heat, and natural disasters. In the event of an emergency, eligible ecobee customers in SDG&E’s service territory will receive a notification when slight, temporary temperature adjustments are needed on their ecobee smart thermostats to reduce demand and help avoid an outage. Customers can help their community by remaining opted into the program or they can skip the event if they’re unable to take part.

“At ecobee, we remain committed to offering innovative smart home solutions that address real problems customers are facing, such as the rise of power outages due to the prevalence of extreme weather brought on by climate change,” said Kari Binley, Senior Manager, Energy Partnerships at ecobee. “We’re excited to launch this new and innovative solution with SDG&E, which will allow more ecobee Smart Owners in California to help their communities and automatically conserve energy without sacrificing their comfort, all while helping to create a more resilient power grid.”

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States recorded 22 weather and climate disasters in 2020, a nearly 40 percent increase from the year before. As extreme weather becomes more frequent and severe due to climate change, electricity experts and California officials have warned that states may not have enough power to continue to reliably meet demand.

The power grid is a challenging balancing act – extreme weather, persistent heat waves and natural disasters cause increases in demand and stress on the power grid, resulting in energy shortages. Through participating in this pilot program during periods of extreme vulnerability for the electrical grid, ecobee and SDG&E customers can save energy and help prevent potential power outages in their communities.

Tantalus Delivers 3 Millionth Intelligent Endpoint to Public Power and Electric Cooperative Utilities

Tantalus

Connected Devices Deliver Next-Generation Smart Grid Solutions and Data-Driven Applications to Help Utilities Modernize, Digitize and Improve Resiliency

BURNABY, BC – September 6, 2022 –– Tantalus Systems (TSX: GRID), a smart grid technology company focused on helping build the utility of the future, is pleased to announce that it has now deployed more than 3 million smart grid-enabled connected meters with its integrated TRUEdge® computing modules to public power and electric cooperative utilities. This milestone is significant in the evolution of modernizing distribution grids of community-oriented utilities. These connected meters with TRUEdge computing modules serve as the backbone of a digital network that improves a utility’s resiliency in the face of massive economic, environmental and regulatory change.

Through these 3 million connected meters, Tantalus is gathering more than 30 billion data points annually that provide visibility into evolving power consumption patterns and corresponding power quality measurements from the edge of the grid. By feeding the “data of power” from the edge of the grid into advanced software applications and AI-enabled data analytics, Tantalus’ customers gain real-time situational awareness to improve their system planning, protect substation and distribution assets, respond faster to emergencies, optimize the efficiency of their grids and enhance their customer support.

These connected devices are also capable of reading multiple communication protocols to support an increasing number of initiatives across water and gas departments of multi-commodity utilities. As water emergencies surface across the United States, Tantalus is delivering an interoperable system that automates the data collection of industry-leading water and gas meter interface units (MIUs), creating enormous economic and operational advantages.

“The world is becoming increasingly complicated for utilities as extreme weather events continue to unfold and new technologies, such as electric vehicles, solar panels and storage applications, increasingly surface across the grid,” said Peter Londa, Tantalus President and CEO. “The distribution grid is at risk, and it is imperative for utilities to access and analyze granular data to improve their visibility into what is currently unfolding in order to proactively plan for the future. Shipping our 3 millionth endpoint is another example of how our team is helping utilities tap into the power of data to become more resilient, reliable and innovative in the face of relentless change.”

About Tantalus Systems (TSX: GRID)

Tantalus is a smart grid technology company that transforms aging one-way grids into future-proofed multi-directional grids that improve the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of public power and electric cooperative utilities and the communities they serve. Our solutions are purpose-built to allow utilities to restore power quickly after major disruptions, adapt to rapidly shifting consumer expectations and population shifts, innovate new solutions based on the adoption of distributed energy resources and evolve their grid infrastructure at their own pace without needless cost or complexity. All this gives our user community the flexibility they need to get the most value from existing infrastructure investments while planning for future requirements. Learn more at www.tantalus.com.

CLEAResult and Virtual Peaker Announce Partnership to Better Serve Utilities
Virtual Peaker Clearesult

Austin, TX and Louisville, KY (September 1, 2022)—CLEAResult, the largest provider of energy efficiency, energy transition, and decarbonization solutions in North America, and Virtual Peaker, a cloud-based SaaS company with the friendliest distributed energy platform on the planet, announced a new partnership today to supercharge customer engagement for demand-side management programs.

The two companies are offering an end-to-end, distributed energy resource (DER) management solution that meets the rapid increase in demand and changing operational needs utilities are preparing for, especially in light of the Inflation Reduction Act. CLEAResult’s proven experience with customer outreach and engagement for energy efficiency and decarbonization programs complements Virtual Peaker’s SaaS platform, which includes demand forecasting, customer engagement, and distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) solutions.

“Together, our teams will deliver the best of both worlds–easier program participation for customers and simpler management for utilities,” said Divakar Jandhyala, CLEAResult’s Chief Product & Technology Officer. “We’re proactively removing participation barriers to improve the experience for everyone.”

The partnership integrates the CLEAResult ATLAS™ platform with Virtual Peaker’s distributed energy platform, connecting customers’ smart devices with advanced demand management tools that give utilities a simple and easy-to-manage overview of customers’ energy habits.

“We’re excited to partner with CLEAResult and look forward to working together to rapidly scale demand side management,” said Kirsten Millar, Director of Policy and Partnerships. “Today’s partnership announcement advances our mission to accelerate the adoption of DERs. By working with industry leaders like CLEAResult and bringing our technology platforms together, we will provide quantifiable cost savings and efficiencies to our utility clients.”

Paper: Peak-Load Energy Management by Direct Load Control ContractsManagement Science

This paper studies direct load control contracts that utilities use to curtail customers’ electricity consumption during peak-load periods. These contracts place limits on the number of calls and total number of hours of power reduction per customer per year as well as the duration of each call. The stochastic dynamic program that determines how many customers to call and the timing and duration of each call for each day is an extremely difficult (NP-hard) optimization problem. We design a scenario-based approximation method to generate probabilistic allocation polices in a reasonable amount of time. Our approach consists of three approximations: deterministic approximation of demand, discretization of the expected demand, and aggregation/disaggregation of the resources.
